Most alignment discussions start too far from ordinary life.
The imagined danger is a system with giant capabilities, strange goals, and enough autonomy to pull the world out of shape. That scenario is worth thinking about. But it is not the only alignment problem, and it is probably not the one most people are actually meeting at work, in study, or in daily decision-making.
The more immediate problem is far more ordinary.
It is convenience.
Most real damage will not come from a model breaking free of human intention. It will come from humans happily accepting output that is good enough to save time, smooth enough to quiet doubt, and fast enough to make scrutiny feel wasteful.
That is the alignment problem I care about most right now.
Not: what if the machine wants the wrong thing?
But: what if the human stops wanting the hard part of thinking?
People rarely say, “I no longer care whether this is right.”
What they say is more practical:
This is how standards move.
Not through explicit surrender, but through small changes in tolerance.
Once a system reliably produces plausible drafts, summaries, rankings, plans, or explanations, the human threshold for what counts as acceptable starts drifting downward. The answer does not need to be excellent to influence action. It only needs to be easier than doing the work properly from scratch.
That is why convenience matters so much. It does not have to defeat judgment in a dramatic confrontation. It only has to make judgment feel expensive.
In real organizations, AI is rarely the final actor.
The typical pattern is:
That middle step is where people reassure themselves. They tell themselves there is still human oversight. Legally and procedurally, that may be true. Operationally, it is often thin.
The human is tired, rushed, overloaded, or outside the real domain depth required to catch subtle errors. The output looks competent. The language is clean. The format resembles work that would normally take effort. So the review becomes a ritual rather than a serious checkpoint.
This is why I have little patience for slogans about “human in the loop” when nobody asks what the loop is actually doing.
A human click is not alignment.
A human signature is not alignment.
A human glance is not alignment.
Alignment, in any meaningful sense, requires that the human still owns the reasoning burden where it matters.
One of the most misleading habits in AI discussion is treating speed as if it were a purely positive multiplier.
It is not.
Speed changes the moral structure of work.
If something that used to take three hours now takes twenty minutes, one of two things happens:
Most systems drift toward the second outcome.
That is not because people are evil. It is because organizations are built to convert time savings into more volume, more responsiveness, and lower apparent cost. The result is that faster drafting often does not buy deeper thought. It buys more surface area and thinner inspection.
This is where convenience becomes governance.
The tool is not merely helping you do the same work faster. It is quietly changing what kind of work the institution believes is sufficient.
We tend to focus on outputs that look bizarre or obviously false.
But the more dangerous outputs are the ones that lower tension.
They give the team a draft when the team is stuck. They produce a rationale when nobody wants to write one. They summarize a policy nobody fully understands. They turn a messy issue into a neat recommendation just in time for the meeting.
In each case, the output provides relief.
And relief is persuasive.
It narrows options. It calms the room. It creates the feeling that the work has moved from uncertainty into structure. That feeling may be false, but it is valuable enough emotionally and organizationally that people often accept it before they verify it.
This is why I do not think the core near-term problem is intelligence running wild.
It is relief running ahead of responsibility.
The same pattern is visible in learning.
A student with instant drafting help can produce something more polished than their understanding. A candidate with instant summaries can feel prepared without having built durable structure. A writer with instant phrasing help can confuse verbal fluency with thought.
None of this requires bad intent.
It only requires that the tool reduce the discomfort that used to signal unfinished understanding.
There was always friction in learning:
Some of that friction was wasteful. Some of it was the price of internalizing structure.
If AI removes the friction without forcing the structure to appear somewhere else, then people will mistake convenience for competence.
That is not a small educational side effect. It is a direct alignment problem between the goal the user claims to have and the behavior the system actually rewards.
I am not arguing for refusal.
The answer is not to avoid useful systems because they are useful. That would be unserious. These tools can widen search, accelerate drafting, expose alternatives, and reduce dead time. I use them myself.
But if convenience is the risk, then the design response has to include deliberate friction at the right points.

This is not nostalgic resistance.
It is systems design.
The point is to decide where speed helps and where speed hides the exact labor that still matters.
This is the standard I would use.
A well-aligned AI system should not simply make work easier. It should make the right work easier while preserving the need for judgment where judgment still carries the risk.
That means some kinds of friction are not bugs.
They are safeguards.
If a system removes every pause, every ambiguity, every request for clarification, every need to inspect an assumption, it may feel excellent while making the human weaker at the point of responsibility.
That is bad alignment even if the model is technically obedient.
Because the real question is not whether the machine followed instructions.
The real question is whether the combined human-machine workflow still deserves trust.
The near-term alignment debate needs to come down from the clouds.
Before we worry only about superhuman misalignment, we should deal with the much more common failure mode: ordinary people, under normal pressures, accepting convenient output in place of accountable thought.
That is where most of the real drift will happen.
Not in one dramatic rebellion.
In thousands of small handoffs where convenience wins, scrutiny loses, and everyone tells themselves that a human was still involved.
Yes, alignment is a model problem.
But in practice it is also an appetite problem.
What kind of cognitive comfort do we want?
How much unearned clarity are we willing to accept?
And where, exactly, are we still willing to pay the cost of thinking for ourselves?
Before we ask only whether future systems will betray human values, we should ask why present humans are so ready to trade those values for speed, relief, and plausible-looking output.
That is the nearer alignment failure.
Not rebellion.
Compliance.
A machine offers relief, a human accepts it, and an organization calls that oversight.
Until that changes, better models alone will not save us.
